Toomer's Corner

I realize that I am trying to play catch up from the last month in my blogging, but when something major happens you just have to tell about it! Well this past Wednesday the students of Auburn received a disturbing e-mail. As you probably know by now the historic trees at Toomer's Corner have been poisoned. I hate to think that a place that holds such joy and celebration for the Auburn family could ever be tarnished by such hate. And though the trees have held a certain spirit for us in past generations the trees themselves are not the spirit alone, and that spirit will certainly never die.


I think the most unsettling aspect of this act is that I can remember rolling Toomer's as a little girl with my family, as a high school student, and as a student at Auburn, and I always assumed that I would get to share and pass on this tradtion with the next generations of my family. Of course the school and city are doing all that they can to save the trees and even if they can't, we do have seedlings of those trees that have been growing for some time that can replace them. It's just sad to think that the trees that were rolled for "Punt, Bama, Punt", the '93, '04, and '10 undefeated seasons, and mainly our National Championship victory won't be there. Still, the pride in my school and spirit for my team will live on. And in the meantime there are many outlets for support and donation to help save the trees or replace them.

There is a "tree hug" rally happening this weekend: We will not actually hug the trees


There is even a fund for the trees being raised by the University of Alabama: Tide for Toomer's


And my favorite is to show your support by either making your Facebook profile picture one showing the trees in all their glory or one of your favorite memories with it to show your awareness and support.

I like to think of it as the trees aren't dead, they're just down 24-0. War Eagle!!
